What inspired you to pursue this career path?
My passion for computing began at a young age when my family purchased a new computer. Rather than discarding the old one, I asked to keep it, so I could learn how it worked with no fear of breaking it. I took it apart, upgraded it, and taught myself how the hardware and software functioned. This hands-on experience sparked my curiosity and led me to start writing my own programs, setting the foundation for my journey into the world of technology.
What is your current role and what does a typical day look like for you?
As the Team Leader of Product Engineering and Development, I lead our software development team, overseeing project planning, code reviews, and team collaboration to ensure timely and high-quality deliverables. A typical day involves aligning team priorities and addressing any technical challenges that we have in the team. I am also still fairly hands on with code which is great too.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
What I enjoy most about working in software development is the constant challenge of working in an ever-evolving field. Technology never stands still, and I love that this requires me to continuously learn, adapt, and find creative solutions. Every project is unique, and the rapid pace of change keeps the work exciting and engaging. There’s always something new to explore, which makes my job both fulfilling and dynamic.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in your field?
Stay up to date with the latest technologies, as the industry evolves rapidly. If you don’t keep pace, you risk falling behind. Also take the time to collaborate with others. Everyone approaches problems differently, and you’re almost certain to learn something new from their perspectives and methods.
What trends do you see emerging in your industry?
One of the biggest trends I’ve seen in tech is the rapid rise of artificial intelligence. It’s exciting to see what AI can do, but also a bit daunting. Being around for this shift has been both fascinating and challenging, as we figure out how to use this technology and maximise its potential.
What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
I can solve a Rubik’s cube.
Have you discovered any new hobbies or interests recently?
I have recently taken up running and have just completed a 10K and my first half marathon. One day I would love to complete a marathon!
What do you appreciate most about your team members?
We have a great group of people who come together to get the job done. Everyone contributes, supports each other when needed, and works collaboratively to meet our goals. It’s a team effort, and that shared commitment makes all the difference.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career?
‘Keep it simple stupid’. Simple solutions are usually better than overly complicated ones. Complex solutions are harder to understand, maintain, and test. We strive to write simple, modular solutions whenever possible.
Massive thanks to Neil for allowing us a little glimpse into his life both at home and at work. Keep your eyes peeled for more insights into our team at iCoupon.
